Nakshatras are Lunar Constellations which can be described as subdivisions of a zodiac sign. Each zodiac sign is divided into 3 parts of 10 degrees each and then further the nakshatras divide down to 3.20 degrees each. To explain it in an easy way let’s say your birth chart is a pizza pie with 12 slices. Each slice represents a zodiac sign like Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.
Now let’s say we further cut up each slice into 3 pieces. Each one of those 3 slices would be a nakshatra.
For general understanding purposes this would be a good enough analogy to explain how the nakshatras show up in your birth chart.
Here I will list each Nakshatra and its Ruling Planet also called the Lord of the Nakshatra.

Since the nakshatras do not divide up to completely fit the entire 3 nakshatras into each zodiac sign they are partitioned out partially into the next zodiac sign as shown in the list above.
It is also important to understand simply that the Nakshatras are static. The Zodiac signs are also static. They do not move like the Planets do. Only the planets move while in orbit and will over the time that they are traveling in their orbit they will travel into a zodiac sign and depending on its degrees it will be traveling through the corresponding nakshatra.
One must imagine the static Zodiac as a Map and the planets with defined orbits and speeds traveling through the signs of the Zodiac and the corresponding Nakshatra in order to have a clear understanding of how the Astrological Star Map (your birth Chart) comes into being. Your birth chart is a static Picture of the cosmos as they were at the exact moment of your birth.
The importance of the Nakshatra in Vedic Astrology is undeniable. Any child being born was immediately identified as being born in a Nakshatra where the moon was traveling through at the time the Child is born. So important is the birth nakshatra that the letters and sounds corresponding to the birth nakshatra were to be used to name the child. As an example, a person born under Punarvasu Nakshatra was to be give a name beginning with the letters that sound out Kay, Ko, Ha, and Hee.
In all the years that I have been practicing Astrology the language and symbology of the Nakshatras is priceless in leveraging the energies granted to you at birth to live a better life.
The Birth Nakshatra has special Significance and it is very important to learn as much as you can about your birth Nakshatra to be able to use its colors, letters and numbers to make important choices in life.
